Youth Council

MISSION: To be a focused and knowledgeable team who will inform and educate the public.
PURPOSE: To increase knowledge and understanding for everyone about mental health.  
GOAL: To erase prejudices against youth with mental health issues.
PROJECTS: Currently the council is involved in several Advocacy and public service projects.
  • The East Nashville Magnet Literature School book project seeks to advocate on behalf of Children's mental health awareness. In a book titled "From the Bottom of our Hearts" high school students explore mental health through poetry, verse, and art.   In a show of solidarity copies of the book will be sent to each high school in New York.  The book release will coincide with Children's Mental Health week.
  • The Council will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity and giving volunteer hours to assist local families build their own homes.
  • The Council will be planning the activities for the annual Tennessee Voices for Children's Children's Mental Health Week celebration at the Nashville Zoo.
  • The Youth Council has completed their 2nd video "Erasing the Stigma - Steering the Acceptance of Mental Disabilities". The video produced with David Earnhardt and Company at the helm shows the youth council working togather as a team to complete a series of mentally and physically demanding tasks on an adventure course.

    We are so proud of our Mid-TN Youth in Action Council members who spent their time last week volunteering to distribute water to flood victims. You can check out pictures of them "in action" here.

    With more than 30 youth in attendance from across the state, the 2010 Youth-In-Action Retreat joined together youth and TVC staff, as well as mentors and volunteers, from Memphis, Jackson, Nashville, Columbia, and Mt. Pleasant for a day of learning, sharing, growth, and FUN! The day featured activities such as a discussion panel, the sharing of personal stories and struggles/challenges overcome, games, dancing, promoting leadership skills by creating political "campaigns," and learning about community through creating art.

    After scoring the winning touchdown which took his school to the State Championship, Columbia Central High School Senior and Youth In Action Council member Gerron Moore was honored as Player of the Week by the Tennessee Titans on December 1, 2009. Congratulations, Gerron!
