TeenScreen

Columbia University has perfected a reliable, easy, voluntary and confidential computer screening program for depression, suicide risk, and other mental disorders that pose a serious threat to health, well-being, and academic success.  It is used across the country and recognized in the report by the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health as a model program for early identification of mental illness.

TeenScreen is FREE to qualifying communities, schools, agencies, and other service providers.  TeenScreen's goal is to find youth who are at risk for depression and/or other mental health issues before they fall behind in school, end up in trouble, or end their lives.  Tennessee Voices for Children can assist you in implementing a TeenScreen Program in your community.

GOALS

  • Screen youth for the risk factors of suicide and a variety of mental health
  • Help communities, schools, agencies, etc., establish permanent mental health screening programs for youth
  • Participation in Columbia University's mission of ensuring that ALL youth are offered a mental health check up before leaving school

Program News

  • 04/05/2009 - 8:21pm
    • Parents provide consent for their child to complete a brief, self-administered mental health screen.
    • Results are reviewed by a screening staff member.
    • A face to face interview is then held with a mental health professional and all screening participants.
    • Parents of identified youth are informed of the screening results and resource options.
    • All results are confidential and not made available to non-health professionals such as teachers, without parent consent.
