OVERVIEW OF RESPITE

Respite is a temporary break for families and caregivers of people who have disabilities or chronic illnesses. Providers work for families who have children ages birth to 18 years old. Children with disabilities are at a higher risk for abuse and neglect more than children who do not have disabilities or illnesses. This is due to the added stress and responsibilities of families coping with these issues. As a provider you will be there to help relieve some of their stress by giving families a break. Respite can be at the family’s home, at your home, or in the community – like a show, roller skating, eating out, or whatever is fun for the child. It is also important to remember that sometimes there are brothers and sisters, and in order for the parents to get a real break the respite may include caring for them as well.
Respite can help make life a little less stressful for the parents of children with disabilities. Our greatest hope is that every child with a disability is able to stay at home and that the family is able to get all the help they need to stay together.
