TennCare for Children was founded in 1999 with funding from the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). In 2006, we became a program of Tennessee
Voices for Children! Find
out more about our history and organizational
structure.
As part of RWJF’s “Covering Kids and Families” initiative,
we have been doing outreach for 7 years. Our goal is to educate families
about TennCare and to reduce barriers to coverage. Find
out if your
child is eligible to receive TennCare.
In addition to TennCare, beginning in 2007, Tennessee will have a new
insurance program for children! It will be called CoverKids, and is part
of Governor Bredesen’s Cover Tennessee initiative. CoverKids will
be part of a national program called the State Children’s Health
Insurance Program (SCHIP). SCHIP was created and funded in 1998 by the
U.S. Congress to give more U.S. children access to affordable health
insurance.
CoverKids insurance will be available to Tennessee kids under 19 who
aren’t
eligible for Medicaid, who have no other insurance, and whose families
earn less than 250% of the poverty level. Benefits are slated to begin
in March of 2007. Applications may be available as soon as January of
2007. For more details about CoverKids, including income limits, click
